Best destinations for underwater diving can be a particularly debatable subject anywhere there's diving. You first have to ascertain countless other things. Does this mean the best spot for diving in the entire world, or a particular region? Best diving spot to learn how to dive or for pro divers. There's also the qualifying factors of deep diving vs shallow diving and wreck diving vs reef diving? There's also clean water diving and diving in caves. There are a large amount of different diving options, deciding the best will be difficult!
The best reef diving in the world, or at the very least the most famous and best publicized, is the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. It's the biggest living structure in the world and home to billions of creatures. The reefs and oceanic life found around it is just astonishing. Of course, as Steve Irwin and many others have found out, it's no where close to the best place to dive and if it must be safe, the Great Barrier Reef won't be for you. There's the Lesser Great Barrier Reef of Belize as well as the Saba Bank, both in the Caribbean and top diving spots, they've a better safety record.
Then there is freshwater diving, and some of the brooks in Florida are wonderful. Crystal Stream is amazing with awesome visibility. There also are heaps of fish and those extraordinary manatees. The area has countless dive operators and there are even some underwater caves.
If you're into underwater caves, you actually need to think about Central America. Contemporary studies suggest masses of miles of underwater cavern systems, generally water but they mix into salt water. The life is fantastic and worth seeing, but cavern diving is highly dangerous! If that's your dream, the best is down in the Yucatan!
The best wreck diving? That may be a truly tricky question. The waters round the islands of St. Christopher and Nevis in the Caribbean are reported to have the remains of hundreds of ships, sunk both in army battles and by pirates as well as tempests. The waters are warm, clear and lively, so it is undeniably one of the finest if not the best!
That's the thing about a subject like this. It should be about some of the finest instead of the finest, the best is always up for debate!
